About Gary


My extensive management and supervision experience helps me support people across a range of workplace and other coaching settings.  

I have a good understanding of workplace dynamics, including the challenges that heavy workloads  place on people.  I am very motivated to help others create their own success, guide their own development, and create high levels of satisfaction in their work lives. 

My coaching practice draws on a range of models to provide motivation, accountability, and expertise to help people become more effective.

If you are a senior leader, an HR manager, or a staff member, coaching can help you and/or the people you work with.  I can provide an independent set of eyes to assist in situations where an external perspective could be useful.  

Education and Experience

My expertise includes Master’s degrees in Management and Civil Engineering from Massey and Auckland Universities, and I hold a Diploma in Professional Coaching.  I am a member of the Human Resources Institute of New Zealand and the Institute of Management New Zealand, and have accreditation to administer the Saville Wave suite of psychometric testing tools.

My workplace experience includes over 25 years as an engineer and manager of complex teams, specialising in the local government sector. This experience includes political interaction and management, community engagement, multifaceted technical judgement, strategic planning, business process improvement, project management, change management and organizational development.  

People know me as having strong presentation skills, an ability to achieve understanding across diverse groups of stakeholders and skills to build workable consensus in challenging situations.

Alongside working as a coach I am a PhD candidate at Auckland University of Technology's School of Management, researching Information Overload in the context of workplace well-being.  My previous academic research explored  workplace factors associated with upward feedback - how best to give feedback to your boss!

Personal:

I live in Auckland and Whangarei, New Zealand, with my wife Trish. We enjoy the lifestyle offered by New Zealand and especially by Northland’s coastal environment. We travel regularly around New Zealand and elsewhere, visiting our grown up children and learning about new places and cultures.   We spent most of 2013 backpacking in Europe, and during 2015 completed  the French Way of the Camino de Santiago in northern Spain.  Check it out by following the link!  A fantastic experience.
